Health Effects
The effect of ozone and corbon monoxide on our health.
Ozone causes shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, eye and nose irritation. It is especially dangerous to the elderly, children, asthmatics and people with chronic respiratory ailments.
Carbon monoxide has similar effects to ozone and is especially dangerous to people who are susceptible to respiratory illnesses and heart disease.
During days in which ozone is at extremely high levels, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that people with cardiovascular disease, such as angina should limit physical activity and avoid outdoor activities.
In summer 2001, the American Heart Association released a medical report that studied heart disease and its correlation to air pollution. The report concluded that there was evidence of a causal relationship.
The American Lung Association reports that over 66,000 people in Oklahoma County alone may be susceptible to effects of air pollution.
